Официальное название - "Штат Род-Айленд и плантации Провиденса" [ State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations]. На севере и востоке граничит со штатом Массачусетс [ Massachusetts], на юге имеет выход к проливу Род-Айленд-Саунд [Rhode Island Sound]. Наиболее крупные города: Крэнстон [Cranston], Ист-Провиденс [East Providence], Ньюпорт [ Newport], Потакет [ Pawtucket], Уорик [ Warwick], Вунсокет [Woonsocket]. Местность на востоке низменная, на западе - холмы. Умеренно континентальный влажный климат. Ко времени появления европейцев на территории будущего штата здесь жили индейцы племен наррагансет [ Narragansett], вампаноаг [ Wampanoag], пекот [ Pequot], ниантик [Niantic] и нипмук [ Nipmuc]. В 1511 у берегов Род-Айленда появились португальцы во главе с М. Корте Реалом [Corte Real, Miguel]. В 1524 залив Наррагансетт был обследован Дж. да Верразано [ Verrazano, Giovanni da], в начале XVII в. здесь появились голландские торговцы-мореплаватели. В 1636 изгнанный из Бостона пастор-диссидент Р. Уильямс [ Williams, Roger] основал первое постоянное поселение Провиденс.
